Shred it?

I don't know if I can do it.
It hadn't occurred to me that when we change Charlotte's name over we would have to give up her original birth certificate and they destroy it! Somehow that was like a knife going through my heart. Do I have to give up mine too? Even though we are hyphenating both of them?
I don't know if I can do that.
Maybe I'll just borrow his last name like they say I can without legally changing it. I wonder if he'll accept that?

You don't have to give up your birth certificate, you will get a marriage licence showing you married him and you use that to change your name on the rest of your id and with the government, but your birth certificate stays the same.

Charlotte has to relinquish hers when we legally change it.
not sure If I can do that. So I need to find another way around it all that will satisfy everyone

Documentation Requirements

All applications must include the completion of Part 1 (a) and (b) by the applicant. An applicant may be a person changing their own name, or, a parent applying to change their child's name.

Applicant's must surrender all original Birth Certificates for each person whose name is to be changed if born in Canada. If born elsewhere, certified copies of immigration papers or a permanent resident card is required. A marriage certificate may be required and proof of custody where a parent is applying to change their child's name without the other parent's consent.

Original Canadian certificates will be destroyed upon name change registration. You will be required to order new certificates from the province\territory where the event took place.

Ordering a new Birth certificate is super easy!! I ordered new ones not very long ago. Just order her a new one now (say it's lost) so you have an extra when u have to send one in. Then you have one to keep.

Can't she borrow his name? Why does she have to do all the legal stuff, just start using it. I remember lots of blended families who did that.
